Oscar Piastri wist zondagavond de Grand Prix van Saoedi-Arabië te winnen voor Max Verstappen en Charles Leclerc Na afloop ging de meeste aandacht van coureurs, fans en teambazen echter uit naar een tijdstraf die de Nederlander van de FIA kreeg. De meningen zijn flink verdeeld.
Op het Jeddah Corniche Circuit had Verstappen een moeizame start en hij zag Oscar Piastri direct naast zich verschijnen. Om een botsing met de laat remmende McLaren te voorkomen, week hij uit en sneed de eerste bocht af. Hoewel de Nederlander de leiding wist te behouden, leverde dit hem een tijdstraf van vijf seconden op. Die straf moest hij inlossen tijdens zijn enige pitstop van de race, waardoor Piastri eenvoudig voorbij kon komen. "Nou, fucking mooi is dat", riep Verstappen over de boordradio toen hij hoorde dat hij een tijdstraf had ontvangen.
Meningen verdeeld over incident Max Verstappen
Na de race ging het veelvuldig over Verstappen en Red Bull Racing, vooral vanwege de straf die de Nederlander kreeg. Volgens veel fans had de renstal de Nederlander de instructie moeten geven om de positie terug te geven. Helmut Marko gaf echter aan dat het team dat niet deed omdat ze ervan uitgingen dat er geen straf zou volgen. De meningen over de opgelegde penalty lopen uiteen. Sommigen vinden het terecht, maar anderen niet. Enkele fans trekken zelfs een vergelijking met het incident tussen Verstappen en Lewis Hamilton in 2021.

He knew going back in would cost him more than 1 postion. So he made the best 4d chess he could. Stay out. Get the penalty, and maybe even challenge it and get away with it. Or give the place back, lose rythm, and end up losing 3-4 places more in lap 1. Its not rocket science.
